LABORATORY TECHNICIAN Ref: NPM4013 Grade 5, £19,263 - £21,072 per annum
We are seeking to recruit a proactive Senior Laboratory Technician to support the provision of Organic/Physical Chemistry laboratory practical classes within the Division of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Working as part of a busy team you will have HNC (or equivalent) in a chemistry-based discipline along with supervisory experience and excellent organisational and team based skills which are essential.

Post Title: Senior Teaching Support Technician

Responsible to: Teaching Laboratories Manager
Main Purpose of Post:
To provide specialist technical and organic/physical chemistry support for the undergraduate & postgraduate practical teaching programmes. Supervise & train technical staff, ensure H&S compliance within work area and assist staff and students with techniques and applications
Main Duties & Responsibilities:
Plan, prepare, prioritise and organise the equipment and materials required to ensure the smooth running of the organic/physical chemistry practical classes.
Demonstrate, assist and advise students with analytical techniques, use of instrumentation and problem solving.
Production of standard reports, eg SOPs, practical schedules, experimental technique methodologies.
Plan, monitor and maintain stocks of materials and consumables.
Plan, monitor and ensure appropriate equipment maintenance regimes.
Ensure compliance with H&S procedures.
Supervise and train subordinate staff and workplace students
Liaison with Academic Class leader to highlight and implement any improvements or adaptations to practical class requirements
Work as member of a wider School team with any other duties commensurate with the grade and nature of the post
Essential Qualifications
HNC or Equivalent in a Chemistry discipline
Essential Skills and Knowledge
Analytical techniques eg IR, EP, Spectrometry
Familiarity of H&S procedures within a chemistry environment and COSHH Assessments
Ability to keep accurate records and write SOPs
Excellent organisational skills including ability to work to strict deadlines and as part of a team.
Good level of IT Skills including MS Word & Excel
Desirable Skills and Knowledge
Familiarity in the use of GC and associated applications
Use of computers in data acquisition
Essential Experience
Recent and relevant working within a Chemistry Laboratory
Some supervisory experience
Desirable Experience
Minimum of 3 years Working within a Teaching Laboratory
