Design Engineer          

Job Description:          

A new product design engineer; responsible for the design of Filtration products for supply to the powertrain OEM industry. Working for a major 1^st tier supplier and being responsible for creating robust, innovative and cost effective solutions, liasing closely with the major OEM customers.

 Key Responsibilities and requirements 

• Responsibility for management of all design activities from concept through to production validation. Preparation of 3D and 2D CAD models and drawings.
• Responsible for customer technical liaison on new projects, ensuring that the designs meet the customer’s requirements and often exceed their expectations and remain competitive to achieve sales growth and increase market share.
• Responsibility for ensuring cost targets are achieved, and designs are commercially competitive.
• Responsible for product design and component tooling spend in the region of $1M.
• Responsible for chairing multi-disciplinary project meetings ensuring the project activities are completed in a timely manner.
• To communicate project requirements effectively, both internally and externally with suppliers, sales, manufacturing, production engineering, purchasing and customer service departments to ensure that designs functional, cost, quality, build and delivery targets are met.
• Support supplier selection and liaison to ensure that technical specifications and design criteria are met.
• Responsible for technical material and design strategy for tendering for new contracts ensuring that the company have the most competitive and innovative design with the best technical merit and added value.
• Preparation of product designs and specifications to support detail design preparation and BOM specification and preparation of cost estimates.
• Assist in the compiling Design and Development validation plans to ensure that the product or system meets the product specification and quality requirements, supporting and advising the test engineers to ensure tests are conducted to requirements.
• Responsible for planning and preparation of internal and external prototype samples, e.g. ordering of external supplier components and management of internal samples and prototype manufacture.
• Responsibility for the robust application of DFMEA to ensure the product or system is designed and validated to company and customer requirements.
• Developing and maintaining relationships with key supplier research & development personnel, in order to obtain priority industry information and future business opportunities.
• Preparation of timing plans.
• Preparation of Technical Specification from individual components to complete assemblies.
• Maintenance of Project Files and documentation in line with TS16949 / Department Procedures.
• To conceive and implement new development ideas and projects.
• The position will require national and international travel.
• As part of the design process, support the manufacturing process studies, eg Design for Manufacture, PFMEA.

Person Description:    

Essential

• Proactive and innovative component and systems design engineer with 3D CAD capability, ideally Pro Engineer / Catia.
• PC literate / numerically competent
• Qualified Mechanical Engineer: Good Honours Degree or equivalent with experience
• Articulate with good written and verbal communication and leadership skills.
• Excellent team-work skills, energetic and enthusiastic
• Minimum 2-3 years engineering design experience

Desirable

• Understanding of powertrain filtration systems.
• Experience in design and specification of powertrain components and systems.
• Appropriate understanding of FEA and CFD analysis
• Previous experience working with an OEM or automotive component supplier.
• Understanding of diesel engine emissions control technologies.
